The play The Glass Menagerie shows the contrasted aliveness of the main character, tom Wingfield. Tom struggles with being a unassailable calculateer, a protector of his family, and a fulfiller of his dreams. Tom wishes to escape his dysfunctional family life and gain some sense of independence.
