Graham Greene's (2004) The Quiet American

Like America is severe tn prevent the circle of communist and anti-American regimes in the Middle-East, so Pyle is in Saigon to prevent both the spread of collectivism in the region as well as to influence the increase business leader of the french and Europe. In so doing, Pyle warns his friend (who entrust ultimately kill him), that he should non be "against" America, just instead should be "against the French" and "Colonization" (Greene, 2004, p. 120). In lyric of a similar nature, President Bush maintains Americans must not hate those of Middle-Eastern origin but terrorists who are afraid of the spread of republic and freedom in the region.

America's current involvement in the Middle East is quite like The quietly American and the adventures of Alden Pyle. When a bomb is set off in the center of a city, Pyle makes offhand comments about the deaths of those killed, suggesting it is better they died for a healthy cause than for the other side. This positing of us against them mentality is very ethnocentric and it is this ethnocentrism that makes Pyle blind to the real sights, sounds, and pleasure of Vietnamese society that is in need of neither democracy, communism, nor colonialism if it is to enjoy such t

Even so, we continue to impose democracy on Iraq, and blame the need for it on others who would trounce the determine and freedoms guaranteed by democratic institutions and societies. This is why Pyle advocates the advice of York Harding, who suggests that what is needed in Asia is a "Third Force" that will prevent the spread of colonialism and communism by offering the alternative provided by democracy (Greene, p. 205).

In conclusion, we can see a swell number of parallels between The Quiet American and American straw man in Iraq. We also see the parallel of current U.S. presence in Iraq as a means of preventing the spread of power of other regimes in the region, much like American forces replaced French and European forces in Vietnam. Like Pyle never sees the real Vietnam, our current Administration continues to keep its eyes unkindly to the realities nf the Middle Eart. In this manner, like Py
